I liked "The Gunslinger" well enough to read straight through in a couple of days. However, it really seemed too hard to be something, but I couldn't figure out what. I'm sure it's meant to be enigmatic, but a good enigma should never be pointed out. There were several points in the novel where the gunslinger wonders if he's really dead. This tale didn't move me. This is an inter-dimensional story of a man tracking his nemesis across a vast desert. I will probably read the rest in time but I think there are better king stories out there. ...more

I'm always looking for a reason to hate Stephen King, and typically it's not an impossible feat by any stretch of the imagination. He's simply not a very good writer, though he loves more than anyone else in the industry to talk about "the craft of writing."

But I digress.

This may be the best Stephen King novel I've read. Maybe because he wrote it when he was young and ambitious. Perhaps it's the fact that he didn't have to worry about actually ENDING the series with this one, so didn't resort to ...more
