It took me awhile to get usesd to Saramago's writing style - no quotes around the character's words, minimal puncuation, run on sentences, etc.

But once I got passed that, and it was within the first 20 or so pages, I was throughly engrossed in the story.

The depressing, brutal scenes inside the old school building are still vivid in my brain.

Oh, and skip the movie - it was horrible.

This was one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. It was a raw picture of the cruelty, and kindness, of the human population at it's most desolate. I found the fact that none of the characters had names to be most interesting, made it more faceless that way.

Over all, I really enjoyed the book, though it was definitely haunting.
