I suppose this is what one would call a good book, but I gave up half way. Both my husband and daughter really liked it (in French translation), but the unrelenting miserableness of it all really got to me. And I was bored, bored, bored.
Maybe he writes wonderfully in Portuguese, and maybe it translates well into French, but I found the English stilted and clunky, not poetic at all. It really irritated me that the characters had no names (probably to dehumanise them even more) but I just felt th ...more

I'm giving this five stars, not because I particularly enjoyed it, because it impossible to enjoy a book so stock full of horrifying pictures and images, but I definitely appreciated it. There are some images from this book that I won't soon forget.
Blindness is written in a way that I've never come across, with huge chunks of paragraphs with no breaks for dialogue, and no quotations. The writing just streams together seamlessly, and this took a bit getting used to.

I don't know what to say. This was a great book about an epidemic of blindness. Go read it. You'll like it. I did have to knock it down a star because it is kind of hard to read. The paragraphs are pages long and he gets a bit wordy, at times.
