As this book is considered literary sci-fi I was attracted to it but also a little concerned that in the effort to achieve literary status the author might have discarded the essence of sci-fi.
My first impressions were that the style of both the writing and the story-telling were a little old fashioned. It was lighter on the science philosophy and also less chauvanistic than such classics as Heinlein and Dick. Bleak! That is the best way to describe this "speculative fiction" by literary giant, Margaret Atwood. If you are a fan a handmaid tale, you should appreciate this vision of the demise of humanity.
I probably picked the wrong time to read such a book. Having listened to NPR on how NIH has lifted the ban on creating chimera for growing organs for humans, gives me grave, nerve wracking nightmares. So, the full review. First the positives. Margaret Atwood's writing! She writes so elegantly, I kept wanting to highlight sections and I never highlight. The world and the story was amazing and felt very real, like there's a very real chance humanity could destroy itself in this way. However, I think in certain parts she went too far, like how far we (as a species) could dull ourselves to sex and violence.
