FINAL THOUGHTS
Great and funny ZA book. The first of which is free on Amazon. I rented the audio version from my local library. While a lot of the 1-star referred to the grammar and spelling. Or the way Mike Talbot jokes. I didn't even notice that. So while it wasn't my favorite ZA book ever. It was great to ...more

I have been reading quite a bit of post-apocalyptic fiction of late, some of which involves zombies destroying humanity, so it becomes difficult for a novel or series to stand out from the pack. This is even moreso when you add in television shows and movies. Zombie Fallout takes place immediately after the government lets loose a cure for H1N1, which unwittingly destroys much of the human race. This wasn’t supposed to be how it began…dammit! I had just turned the shower on and was preparing to scrub the dirt and grime away that I had amassed during the day on-the-job. I worked for the highway department fixing potholes. At one time in my life I was what you would consider a white-collar worker. I was a Human Resources Generalist for a Fortune 500 company. This wasn’t supposed to be how it began…dammit! I had just turned the shower on and was preparing to scrub the dirt and grime away that I had amassed during the day on-the-job. I worked for the highway department fixing potholes. At one time in my life I was what you would consider a white-collar worker. I was a Human Resources Generalist for a Fortune 500 company. To put it delicately, I made bank. And then President Bush saw fit to end my salad days. Was it really his fault? I don’t know, but he was an easy scapegoat. After the unemployment benefits petered out and still with no hot prospects, I took a city job. It was dirty, backbreaking work and I made less than when I was collecting unemployment, go figure. I made more sitting on my ass playing the Wii. But at least it was honest work. Never once in the three months that I had been working there did I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and stress out about having not filled in a hole on Havana Avenue. There were benefits to blue-collar work, lack of stress being one of them.

With apologies to all the Mark Tufo fans out there and the rave, 5-star reviews, I simply didn't like this book. I didn't get it, didn't feel it, couldn't understand it. And I'm a big fan of zombie fiction.

With a few exceptions, the story is written from the perspective of Mike Talbot, a middle aged ex-Marine, whose inner thoughts life and the zombie apocalypse are intimately detailed by the author. Mike and his family live in Little Turtle, an apartment complex that is beset by zombies after the H1N1 virus reduces most of the population to smelly zombies. Throughout the book, and despite the gravity of the situation, there seems to be a couple of common themes amongst the living: fart and shit jokes, and drinking beer. The opening sequence has Mike confronting zombies after stepping in doggie poop. Episode after episode recounts in olfactory detail the farts and bathroom smells of Mike, his family, and even the dog Henry. Really? After the second time, this annoying. After the nth time, I was just disappointed that anyone thought this funny enough to keep writing about it.

I had a hard time engaging with any of the characters. Mike, to me, had some major issues. His wife Tracy had absolutely no likeable or even redeeming qualities. His daughter was a carbon copy harridan. The dog was a old, lazy sack of farts. I could go on and on, but I'd rather not.

I'm committed to reading the series, but I don't know that I'll fire up book 2 anytime soon. ...more
