Centuries ago, the Tripods took over Earth and enslaved mankind. Every human wears a helmet made of metal that makes it so they are controlled by the Tripods. There is a period of time in one's childhood, however, where one is free to think for oneself.

When thirteen-year-old Will is told that there is a place in the mountains where there are people free of the Tripods, he decides he doesn't want to be capped and runs away. Along the way, he is joined by a c

Old sf ya. I'm pretty sure I read some of this series while still in grade school - but my memory is that the local library didn't have this, the first book and that I didn't try harder to find it. This was readable. The interactions between the main characters are a bit irritating but were clearly intended to be. The location is disguised but it is pretty clear that we start in England and we sail to France and end up in Switzerland. Having one of the characters try to figure out the possibilit ...more

The White Mountains is the first novel in a post-apocalyptic childrens (well, teen really) trilogy. The setting is a world that has fallen back to a time that most closely resembles the middle ages - an agrarian society. I read this when I was in grade school and it is a book that has stayed with me - albeit in bits and pieces. Re-reading it, I know why it appealed to me - a kid runs away and goes on a dangerous journey and finds a new world "out there", smart characters, and descriptions of post-apocalyptic items to puzzle out.

The audio version is well-narrated by William Gaminara.
