(Yes, that plot is reminiscent of The Hunger Games, but Battle Royale came first, and has a different feel to it.)

I got this book for my birthday several years ago (thanks, Mer!), and quickly read it from cover to cover shortly thereafter. It's one of the most violent, fast-paced, and funny books I've ever read. While it may not be high art, it is pure pulp brilliance. ...more

First, I'd like to say that if given a chance I would rate this a 3.5. Since that's not possible, I'm giving it a 4. The thing is, I really enjoyed reading it -- well, as much as you can enjoy reading a book about 40 kids who are forced to kill each other in all sorts of gruesome ways. The violence isn't what makes me want to give this book a 3.5 instead of a 4 rating, however; rather, I want to downgrade it a bit because of a few storytelling flaws (which I won't share here -- don't want to spo ...more
