I first read the A Wizard of Earthsea series when I was probably 10 or 11. Even as an adult, if you put that series down in front of me, I'm going to read at least 20-30 pages before I put it down (and I still own them all), as much for nostalgia as for enjoyment of the story itself. I have read only 1 or 2 pages of Harry Potter, and have sat through two of the movies with kids, but Le Guin can probably wipe Rowlings off the map with her Fantasy. I originally read this book because it was recommended on feministing.com as a book with feminist ideals. It does live up to that as well as go way beyond in terms of scope.

At first it seemed a bit slow and overly descriptive, but it has to be that way to cover the dense descriptions and discussions and big ideas about politics and philosophy and physics. It seems almost like a thought experiment about anarchism, capitalism and equality.
