This is gonna be hard to review. First of all, I read a TON, but rarely and I mean rarely, do I get touched by a story or characters. This story in spots hit me like a train and I loved the fact that as rich and totally weird as the world was, there were hints of more. That might have been my wreck of a brain trying to fill in holes, but as a total world building slut of a reader, that hit all my good spots.

For the first third of this book, I was very much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I couldn't get into it at all. Little by little, I became engrossed - if still not entirely convinced. And then, suddenly, I was a sniffling mess who just gave it a five star rating. I'm contrary like that. The slow beginning, which didn't quite sit right with me personally (perhaps just a taste thing), is necessary for the wonderful whole I guess. I ended up liking this a lot.

For those adult and YA readers who loved reading Harry Potter, and also have a taste for a bit of sci-fi, this is for you. This would make (if it is not intended to be already) an excellent YA (middle and high school on up) novel. Like Harry Potter, this has themes involving children that are still readable/enjoyable to the adults.
The ending had a little too much deus ex for me (randomly coming in at the same time), as well as too much of a "happy miniseries ending."

The first third of the story is two children who sort of find each other amidst a crowd of bullies for peers and family members. One goes the mad science way, one goes for magic, and everyone heads for the apocalypse... The non-stop bullying is disturbing, but the magic and science are off-kilter in a charming way.
3.5 stars. This book had a lot of elements I did like, but the pacing was off which made me start and stop it multiple times. The characters didn't grab me once they were grown up, they were more fully fleshed as teenagers. Slight spoiler, but I didn't really believe the romance, it felt a bit tacked on. I would've liked more scenes with the birds/animals too. It was good, not great.

Weird and unique enough to pique your curiousity no end. Defies all labels and genres.
Wasn't too thrilled with the writing quality in some parts but cannot fault the novel's ambition. ...more
