The Three Body Problem takes a familiar premise - aliens need to leave their world and want ours - and works it through in a compelling, near future narrative. It's heavy on the science, with no reason for the reader to judge one way or the other. And it has a surprising number of twists and turns played out in detail - much like in Neal Stephenson's earlier novels. Liu Cixin packs in so many well thought out concepts, I just wonder how he has managed to publish so many books!

"The sun rose to the middle of the sky. Everything that floated -- men, colossal blocks of stone, astronomical instruments, bronze cauldrons -- began to rise slowly, then accelerated. This is hardcore sci-fi, which I usually don’t even attempt. I am pretty sure about 80% of it went right over my head. It’s inventive and kind of fascinating, but difficult. I much prefer the screwball sci-fi of “Year Zero” by Rob Reid (which I also recently read), so.... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just finished a re-read of this in anticipation of the final book ( 1 week from today 9/20/16). It made soo much more sense the second time around. I think I gave it a four star review originally knowing that it was worth it even not fully understanding all of it. Now I can only agree with my original sentiment.
Unfolding a proton, stymieing scientific progress what ?? I get it now.

A reminder that, for me, three stars is a good rating. I enjoyed this book esp. the concepts the author posits. I do wish there was more characterization but overall an enjoyable read.
