WE is the progenitor of the dystopian novel and had I read it in its proper place (i.e. before 1984, Brave New World and Anthem) I doubtlessly would have liked it more. I have owned this book for at least 5 years (and probably a lot longer) but had never read it. I read it now because it is to be discussed at Powells Beaverton SF group next Tuesday, Sept 14th at 7pm. But I can't say I enjoyed it, and I don't expect to read it again.

Very Orwellian, as the blurb notes, but nonetheless distinctly Russian in tone. I read a particularly compelling dramatized audiobook, which brought the story alive with different actors for the different characters, along with a host of background sounds to enliven the narrative.

Really enjoyed this dystopia story, can def see the influence this had on Orwell writing 1984. This story didn't feel like a chore to get through though, and 1984 for me can sometimes feel like it drags on. Flat characters, but that makes sense in a society were everyone is a number and like in most if not all dystopians, acting in any way different from the "norm" will get you killed. ...more
