I loved this book it was just such fun to read.
Being a Trek fan from infancy I immediately got the Redshirts reference but was worried the story would be a sad parody of the show.
Scalzi soon steps out from under the shadow of the Enterprise and sends his characters off into their own reality-bending adventure.
I clicked with the atmosphere on board from the start, I connected with the characters especially Dahl, and love the group's interaction. Kerensky was just weird enough, and dumb enough, w ...more

This is a fun read, especially for Star Trek fans. Loved the clever & engaging main story, but not so much the codas.
Sadly, I was not in the mood for this clever writing exercise - a plea for better writing in science fiction shows wrapped in layers of meta-fiction. (Though I'm all for better writing in science fiction shows...)

If you were a Star Trek fan, you'll love this book. It's very meta and you definitely can't think about it too hard, but it's a super fun, fast, and hilarious read. Minor spoiler, I tend to generally like stories where the real world and fiction blend or clash in some way and that definitely falls into that category. When I got to the first coda, I wasn't sure what what happening and wasn't sure I liked what happened, but then I did and I definitely appreciated it.

It was an interesting book. Parts of it didn't seem particularly well written, but I think that was deliberate. It was a nice homage to sci-fi tropes, including, of course, the Star Trek red shirt phenomenon.
The epilogues were interesting and it was nice to have everything neatly tied up. ...more

😂a comedic take on Star Trek as told by the red shirts perspective. If you are not familiar with the red shirt reference, it’s because they are the folks who have no backstory but always get killed on Star Trek.
A few of our characters get assigned to a ship called the Intrepid and are assigned several assignments. After awhile they begin to notice when the main 5 running the ship are looking for away teams, everyone is busy doing something else so they are not chosen because they know they may ...more
