I adored this story and the characters and was so sorry when it ended. Hig is a 40-something year old man who survived the nasty flu pandemic the killed nearly everyone else, including his wife. 6/6/2016 second time reading it, this time for book club and I still love it. The beginning can be a bit rough only because of his style of writing but Heller finds his groove about 50 pages in and so will you as a reader. If you read The Road you will see some similarities, both in the writing style and the story but The Dog Stars holds its own.

In general post apocalyptic stores are rather dismal. This novel is not an exception to that rule but while most also paint a picture of a dire landscape this one does not. I saw a lot of beauty through the eyes of the main character. Beauty in both landscape and in actions.
I did not expect to enjoy this novel as much as I did because it sounded like a very lonely existence for the few characters that appear. I am glad I gave it a chance. I found it to be fairly thought provoking.

You know post-apocalyptic sci-fi is my genre and I liked this more than most. It's a well-written story and feels authentic. I loved the connection to Jasper and the drive for human interaction. I would definitely read more from this author.
