I originally bought this book for one simple reason, the author, Ally Condie, got a seven figure deal for three books and I was curious - what kind of books can garner such a deal? And now that I've read it, I know why. Not only is this first book intriguing, but it is also well-written. I couldn't put it down. The characters are well-defined, the society, which at first appears perfect, is gradually revealed as a dystopian tyranny that is starting to lose its grip on its citizens.

I gave this book 3.5 Stars.
This is a dystopian novel and being only the second dystopian book I have read I am still getting used to the idea of these kinds of book.
The premise to this story is very interesting, and I really liked the way everything was set up. The Society controlling everything, making the citizens dependent on it, making changes and interfering as it sees fit, etc. I loved the way the story unfolded as well as the direction it took. The pacing was spot on, the characters were ...more

This wasn't the most original plot ever. I kept reading anyway. I love the characters that Condie did present in this book. The relationship between Cassia and her grandfather is so great and just made me happy the whole time. The whole death at a certain time is very Soylent Green. Anyway, Cassia kind of annoyed me with stringing along the two boys. So Bella Swan and obnoxious. Nevertheless, I fell madly in love with the boys. My thoughts are that Cassia should have just stuck with the perfect

This book reminds me a bit of the Hunger Games in that they live in a futuristic society where the government has taken all the choices away. I liked it.
6 days later....I am still thinking about these books (and wishing I had the 3rd!)and how they are really about agency and the choices we make and give away. With the political landscape like it is now, I can totally see how a society can let a government take away their choices in an effort to take away pain, sorrow, mistakes or illness. Cassia ...more

An amazing Take off, a little unexpected flight with many platters and finally an abrupt landing!
Youthful, simple and quite a fun to read novel...!
Want a break this weekend?? This novel is all you want!
A mind chiller and mind twitching as to what it would feel like living in such a SOCIETY!
Liked the jist and the writing of the novel, though found it dissatisfying at certain parameters.
Would still give it a 3.5:)

Amazing..I feel so hopeful for our society after reading this. Yes we are close to this happening to us, but as long as we remain vigilant we can stop it, before it overtakes us.
I thought that the relationship between Ky and Cassia could have been explored more. I wanted them to talk more on the Hill.
I am worried, that the second book, will be too much like Hunger Games. Cassia joins the War on the other side only to discover that that side is just as bad. I hope this is not the case. We will ...more

The Society is in charge and everyone must do as they say. They choose your food, where you live and work, who you marry and when you die. At first Cassia is happy with her life and then she discovers that making your own choices is what she really wants and to do that means the end of life as she knows it. Will she survive the changes? and will she find Ky who is sent to the war? I can't wait to find out!

I had to re-read this book for a class, and I have to say, that I enjoyed it more the second time. Yes this is another dystopian YA novel, but the writing is better than average, actually lyrical and beautiful at times, and the characterization is well done. The world building is complete. Good book for Young and not so young adults.
