Everything that I didn’t like about this book I’m positive other people love so take this review with a grain of salt.
The author tossed almost all the traditional werewolf folklore out the window, but I happen to like traditional werewolf folklore so it didn’t work for me. I love the fact that Sam wasn’t a typical “pretty boy alpha male with a perfect body”, but werewolf novels are one of the few times that type of character makes sen ...more

All respect to Maggie Stiefvater--I enjoyed most of The Raven Boys series, and found The Scorpio Races refreshingly unique. If nothing else, I could appreciate this book as evidence of how the author's prose has developed over time.
This was a largely slow-paced urban fantasy YA romance, spiced with a few flares of violence. The fantasy aspect centers around wolf shape-shifters (NOT werewolves, mind you. There is no intermediate stage between human and wolf in this scenario. Yes, I'm particular a ...more

Shiver was astonishingly good. Werewolves are another thing I am extremely picky about when it comes to them being included in a YA book, but Maggie truly did an amazing job with Shiver. I loved how she portrayed the Werewolves, how it wasn't extremely dark but you still had that subtle touch of darkness. And the writing... Oh boy, the writing. I can't even begin to explain how great of a writer Maggie is, even from the first few chapters I was hooked on the way she writes. Shiver is packed with ...more

More like 3.5. I absolutely loved the writing, and I liked the premise of the novel. I just wasn't the biggest fan of the romance.

I don't usually read books on wolves because most of the past books have been crap. Shiver isn't in anyway crap, it't far from it. I liked the different take on wolves and the beautiful writing. I did get bored halfway through the book which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. The book has a lot of chapters which vary in different sizes. I think maybe the book could have done without a few chapters.

Couldn't keep going with the audio past halfway--switching to reading.
It's very slow going, and the female narrator sounds no older than my 11-year-old. The immature word choices and behavior aren't really helping that. The male narrator does sound like an 18-year-old... but that just makes the dynamic strike an 'ick' factor I can't seem to get past.
I just hope I can alter their voices in my head enough to make it through the hard copy. ...more

Wow. What a great first book!
It had a pretty great spaced out plot line. Not too quick but slow and steady. Maggie Stiefvater wanted her readers to feel it; and feel it I did.
This first book was magical, enchanting and tortuously romantic! My favorite kind of story. A definite must-read. I'm a little worried where she's going to take the story, since it ended great but there are two more books to the series, but I eagerly wait for them nonetheless! :) ...more
