What Members Thought

I read this book years ago, recently I decided to give the audiobook a listen. I think this memoir will always remain my favorite and most helpful writing compass. And, not just because it's mister King, but also, because it's right on the target, every single word. If you want to write, write anything, I umpire you to buy a copy of your own and keep it on your writing desk.

I had this on my shelf for a long time in the early noughties, along with many other King books I never got round to reading (read some I didn't like, so it kind of scuppered my interest). I gave them all away, and I am so annoyed with myself that I did, and I wish so badly that I'd read this back then. However, it's never too late.

I never read Stephen King until I read On Writing, and this I must redress. King is one of the most successful writers of all time due to a passion for the craft, the discipline to write everyday, and of course, enormous talent. I aspire to be a writer, and I value highly King’s advice to people like me, expressed not at all in a high-handed way, but rather with encouragement, and great humor. This is the one book every writer must read, bar none. It will make you laugh, cry, feel shocked and even gross out (it's King, after all) but most importantly, it will teach you how to become a more effective writer. Ten stars out of five. 'Nuff said.

I've actually listened the Audio version, but it's better, I would recommend it, it's like having the same Stephen King talking to you, you can hear his voice in your head. And after finishing it, I still can hear his voice, his advice, when I'm writing. He's totally honest about this, and I loved it.
