I started reading this awhile ago. I got partway in and could see where it was headed. I really don't enjoy reading about people throwing away everything that they love, or everything that they should love -- I really don't. That's probably why I loathed The Awakening (a.k.a. The Want to Scream and Hurl Across the Room) so much. I both love and hate Anna Karenina, but most of all I find the title immensely deceiving. Perhaps Tolstoy could have preempted DH Lawrence and grabbed "Husbands and Wives," particularly because A Tale of Two Cities had been taken. When I take the novel in that fashion, as an exploration of love, marriage, societal norms and expectations, betrayal, forgiveness, and the binds that support and destroy the novel opens up like a lotus. This book was probably unique 150 years ago. Probably talking endlessly about the nitty gritty of marriage, about workers rights and about having affairs wasn't done. To me this didn't live up to the hype.
