This story was such a fun, wild ride that I can completely forgive Powers for his heinous abuse of adverbs. The story also functions on my very favorite theory of time travel: there's no such thing as alternate timelines. Only one. If time travel will be invented and we will travel to our past, we are already living the course of events which resulted from that travel.
