Mystic City (Mystic City, #1) in And So It Begins Reading Challenge

This review was originally posted on Novel InkWhen I picked up Mystic City, I had been reading a ton of contemporaries and I wanted, no NEEDED something different and I was hoping Mystic City would be exactly that. I read the prologue and oh my gosh, it sounded amazing so I was expecting the rest of the story to follow suit. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

I read the prologue and oh my gosh, it sounded amazing so I was expecting the rest of the story to follow suit. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Mystic City starts off at the engagement party of Aria Rose and Thomas Foster, sounds romantic right? Yeah, not so much. Aria can’t remember anything about Thomas. She accidentally overdosed and now everything that has anything to do with Thomas is a blank slate. But, as it happens, he is the only missing part from her life. She can remember everyone else. Oh, and it also just so happens that the Fosters and Roses have been enemies for a million, trillion years and the joining of Aria and Thomas is changing that fact. Convenient right? Yeah, I thought so too.

Aria wasn’t a MC that I cared for. She came across as emotionless, and I hated the way that she just accepted what everyone was telling her. They tell her that she’s madly in love with Thomas, but she feels absolutely nothing when they touch, or kiss, but that’s ok because everyone else says that she’s been in love with him so it must be true. Which I guess is what happens with people with amnesia, but it was just so unreal that he’s the ONLY person she couldn’t remember.

She also came across as self-centered and very naïve and for lack of a better word, stupid. She didn’t think about what may happen before she opened her mouth and got an innocent person killed, and then it was just like ‘ehhh’, like she didn’t even care. And don’t even get me started on how stupid some of her actions were and how lucky she is to even be alive, but that’s only because someone was there to save her ass.

I just don’t even want to go into the world-building, that would be another whole rant and I’m just over it.

In the end, I didn’t get what I was expecting out of Mystic City, instead of getting an awesome dystopian world with a forbidden romance, all I got was anger and frustration. ...more
