Review: Shiver is book one, in The Wolves of Mercy Falls Young Adult Series by Maggie Stiefvater.

This story is about Grace and Sam. Grace is a teenage girl who was attacked by wolves as a child. During the attack, she made a connection with a beautiful yellow-eyed wolf, who saved her from the other wolves. The pack left her with light scares and an obsession with her yellow-eyed wolf. Sam is that yellow-eyed wolf who is in turn, infatuated with the beautiful teenage girl he saved. They had a connection from the moment they met, and this connection continued to grow over time.

When a boy from school is allegedly killed by a wolf, the community decides to herd the wolves away from Mercy Falls. Unfortunately, some of the hunting crew is herding while the others are shooting to kill.
Grace risks her safety by running into the woods to tell the hunters that her friend is in the woods taking photographs. She hopes this will stop the hunters and they’ll retreat from the woods. While talking to a hunter, she hears a shot in the woods and sees blood on herself. She’s not bleeding, but she sees herself dying. In her confusion, she returns home to find her wolf in human form and bleeding to death on porch. Sam recovers at the hospital and they continue to spend every moment together.

Sam teaches Grace to listen to her wolf instincts and to take pleasure in her developed senses. Grace discovers that she was the only person to be bitten by a werewolf and not change. She looks into her past further and believes that her neglectful parents may have inadvertently saved her from becoming the wolf. When threatened by a new werewolf, Grace agrees to try and save the wolf with an injection to cause a fever to burn out the wolf transition. When Sam changes for the final time, she tries the drug on both Sam and the new werewolf. Sam in wolf form, flees during the injection and the new werewolf dies. Grace realizes she’s lost her love in boy and wolf form, never to be seen again. At the end of the book, Sam returns to Grace and they’re both surprised to see him standing on two legs in human skin.

I really enjoyed this book. It was the perfect YA Paranormal Romance. The plot and werewolves were different than other books and I enjoyed that. This wasn’t a romance that was torn apart by miscommunication or another boy, this was absolutely perfect. I loved it and can’t wait to read Linger.

Well I knew I really need to get on top this. I feel like I'm the last person in the world to start reading this. I was a little apprehensive since I HATED Jacob from Twilight and people say that if you're on Team Jacob from Twilight then you'll love this book. That may be true, but I didn't even notice, mostly because Sam didn't remind me of Jacob at all - he wasn't an a$$ all the time like Jacob. Yes, I said it! Have at me Jacob fans!

I love Stiefvater's writing style from previously reading La Well I knew I really need to get on top this. I feel like I'm the last person in the world to start reading this. I love Stiefvater's writing style from previously reading Lament and Ballad, so I wasn't disappointed in that area and I absolutely ADORE Sam and Grace! They're definitely one of the cutest and one of my favorite YA couples. The author has absolutely no problem with starting out right away with the action, and not I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with this. But it was cute how they've always loved each other, even when Sam wasn't human and therefore couldn't even form thoughts and Grace only knew him as a wolf. But he was HER wolf... Hmm (heavy sigh). I'm not sure their relationship is exactly believable though. This takes love at first sight to a whole new level that I couldn't really agree with at first. Overall I'm so happy I started this series. It had been sitting on my shelf for a while and I finally bit the bullet and never turned back.

**SPOILERS!!!**
So Sam is cured in the end... Weird? Yes, definitely. But the truth is, it was the kind of perfect you wanted, and in a way this series could have been a single book. Grace is human, Sam is now human, happily ever after. But since I've already read Linger before doing this review, I now see not everything is not as it seems. How about we say I only read this one. I think this really is a book that could easily stand alone.

I was sad that Jack died though, even if he was creating problems. I want to say that Isabel was being selfish because she didn't care what happened if Sam died from the disease they were going to inject into both boys to induce a fever to get rid of the "disease", but at the same time I would have been as desperate to save my brother as she was. And at whatever cost. It's just too bad that, according to her, her plan worked for the wrong person and now she thinks she killed her brother.

I can't really write much more simply because, well, I don't have much else to say. It's a beautiful love story (one we wish we all had) and the guy is perfect and pretty much ideal but in a subtle way. Stiefvater couldn't have painted a better world and I can't wait to see what happens in Forever! ...more
