The Goddess Test (Goddess Test, #1) in And So It Begins Reading Challenge

It is amazing how an author can turn such a very promising concept into an utterly disappointing read.

I was browsing the Bookstore when I happened to came upon this book, and after reading the synopsis at the back, I was immediately drawn. Who wouldn't be? Greek Mythology rocks! So I happily handed my 599php and immediately locked myself in my room for an all day reading bonanza. I was expecting an exciting, action-packed story. It is supposed to be about a girl who needs to pass 7 tests in orde It is amazing how an author can turn such a very promising concept into an utterly disappointing read.

So I happily handed my 599php and immediately locked myself in my room for an all day reading bonanza. I was expecting an exciting, action-packed story. It is supposed to be about a girl who needs to pass 7 tests in order to become immortal, for God's sake! So I was expecting some tests of courage, maybe Kate fighting Medusa, or finding her way in Tartarus, or having to kill some cyclops. C'mon! It's immortality we're talking about here, surely there needs to be some sort of a challenge in order to get it? But nope. That didn't happen here.

The Goddess Test, turns out to be about a girl named Kate, who's mum is dying of cancer. She requested to spend her remaining days in her childhood town. So to grant her mother's last wish, Kate and her mum head to the middle of nowhere which is Eden. There, Kate met James, which she didn't like at first but suddenly becomes her bff even if nothing really happens to build up their friendship. And then, Kate met Ava, the school's cheerleader who tricked her into coming to the river just to leave her there simply because her boyfriend, Dylan, is interested in Kate, and then Ava managed to get herself killed by diving head first into the river and cracked her skull. What an idiot. But then, something needs to happen so that Henry (Hades) can show off his powers to Kate and offer her his proposition, right? So Henry asked Kate what she will do in order to bring Ava back to life, and guess what Kate said? She said she's willing to do anything! What the F? The girl just tried to trick her! And Kate thinks it's her fault for coming in to Eden in the first place! This girl is a martyr, worst than Bella Swan! She blames herself for everything and just wiling to sacrifice herself all the time. Meh. So Henry brought Ava back to life in a condition that Kate will have to read the story of Persephone to understand what she needs to do in exchange for Ava's life.

And ta-da! Kate and Ava are now bestfriends. Meh. She even told her and James what happened that night. Ava was brought back to life by a stranger after cracking her skull open and Kate was asked to be imprisoned in the Eden Manor for 6 months starting on the Autumn Equinox, in exchange for the gesture. With all the creepiness, surely, someone should have freaked out by then, but nope. No freaking out happened here. I mean, what's wrong with these characters? Their reactions are not what you expect normal people would have. I get it there's a twist at the end about their real identities, but come on! SOMEONE.NEEDS.TO.FREAK.OUT! At least, someone, other than me.

Later, Henry came asking Kate to fulfill her side of the deal, but Kate refused. So Ava died again. And Kate blames herself again. And then she went to the Eden Manor to fulfill her promise. But then, Henry can't bring Ava back to life for the second time but he offered Kate to give her the time she needed to say goodbye to her mother, which is in a coma. Kate agreed. And the Goddess test begins.

Kate needs to pass 7 tests, if she does, she will become immortal and become Henry's wife. Together, they will rule the underworld. And just like Persephone, she will need to spend 6 months (autumn and winter) in the underworld and the other 6 months anywhere she wants to go . If she doesn't pass, then Henry will fade and cease to exist, and Kate will go back to her normal life, her memory of the test, forgotten. Only, there's a problem, all the other girls before her were killed. No one survived passed Christmas.

Sounds exciting right? So what are the challenges, you ask? Will Kate has to go and fight some mythological monsters? Nope. Will Kate needs to learn how to ride a unicorn? Nope. Will Kate needs to tame a cyclop? Nope. The challenge? Kate needs to freakin' pass the test of the 7 deadly sins! No kidding! What the big capital F! If there's some guys notorious for committing the 7 deadly sins regularly, it's the Greek Gods and Goddesses! Aimee Carter should have known that fact! The 7 deadly sins are so Christian! All the Greek Gods and Goddess concerned about is how to screw each other. They couldn't care less about the 7 deadly sins!

And here's the most annoying part, all the Gods and Goddesses are disguised to test Kate as if they have nothing better to do. Come on! Gods and Goddess surely have their own duties to fulfill? How come Artemis and Hera agreed to become Kate's assistant and food taster? Poseidon, the stable master? Hestia as kate's mother's care giver? Apollo, Dionysus and Hephaeustus as guards? Athena as Kate's tutor? And worst, Zeus as Henry's valet? What the hell? How did this happen? You tell me, bacause I don't have any idea.

I think a lot of people's problem with this book is that it's not exactly historically accurate. And they're right, it's not. Hades wouldn't be a virgin, obviously. But that's the point of a re-telling people. It's not exactly the same. There's truths and there's twists, but it's the author's ultimate vision. Sigh, I really wanted to like this one... this is closer to a 2 than a 3. I really can't justify an "I liked it" star rating.

A couple of inconsistencies and a saggy middle made this hard to read (as in, during the climax I actually put it down to do some chores).

Points for mythologi-ness (not a real word) and that's about all. ...more
