Maybe you’re thinking that a book with such a fabulous cover should be as stunning in the inside as it is on the outside, if that’s the case then you’re right. Die for Me is the kind of book you can simply not stop reading and fall in love with every character, especially Jules and Vincent (Ok, maybe that’s because we are girls!).
Die for Me tells us the story about Kate, a girl who has recently lost her parents, and has to move to France with her grandparents. Having lost your parents is sad and tragic, but she’ll find a way to leave all that darkness behind and open up to love.
Kate met Vincent, a lovely young man--maybe not so young, but he sure is lovely--, and started to fall in love with him. But love is not always simple. When Kate sees Jules, the most charming character of all, (And the one we are deeply in love with) die but then sees him again at a museum, alive and kicking, she finds out what his lovely young lover is. Vincent and his friends, Jules included, are not common teenage boys. They are Revenants, a kind of walking dead, that had once died saving someone's life and are eternally forced to relived death again and again.

We really loved this book; we were so into the Kate-Vincent love story that at some point we believed we were actually dating Vincent, though we’d prefer to date Joules (put a nasty face here) over Vincent. But don’t get us wrong, this wasn’t the only reason that makes Die for Me a breathtaking, astonishing and pleasant book, and, therefore, the reason why we loved it. We enjoyed everything; the main characters, the introduction of the Revenants concept, the way Amy plum described every place making you feel like if you were there. We have to point out the fact that everything is set in Paris, France. And some much other stuff that we cannot reveal to not spoiler you, book addicts! Sorry.
Though we would have liked a little more of the charming personality of Jules, we think that Die for Me is an impressive book and spellbinding from the beginning to the end.
So if you like romance, fiction, maybe zombies--aka Revenants--, and you haven’t read this book yet, then this is a must-read book for you.

I want to love this book. I really do. I have a hard bound copy and it costs me more than the budget I usually alloted for books. For the price of one hard bound, you can already buy two soft bound books. So when you spent a lot for something, you want to convince yourself that it's worth the price, right? You don't want to regret spending so much for a piece of mediocre literary work. So I guess, everyone can understand why do I have this strong feeling to love this book so much. God, I envy th I want to love this book. I really do. I have a hard bound copy and it costs me more than the budget I usually alloted for books. You don't want to regret spending so much for a piece of mediocre literary work. So I guess, everyone can understand why do I have this strong feeling to love this book so much. God, I envy those reviewers who receive free book copies from publishers. It's much easier to burn a book if you did not spend a single cent of your hard earned money on it. Sigh.

So here comes my dilemma. I can't love this book, no matter how much I try. I like it, but I can't bring myself to love it. It reminds me of a boy who once loved me; he was so nice and sweet and I desperately wanted to reciprocate his feelings... But I couldn't. Aaahh.. Unrequited love is the most painful thing, I guess.

Die for me is a love story, through and through. After the horrible car accident that took the lives of their parents, Kate, and her sister, Georgia, decided to moved to Paris and live with their grand parents.

Having a traumatic and dark past gave Kate an excuse to act all mopey and moody and miserable. Of course, she refused to make any friends, as that will definitely ruin her "I-am-a-girl-who-experienced-a-terrible-loss-at-such-a-young-age" facade. So she decided to hang out at parisian cafés all by herself while reading some classics. Very Bella Swan-ish, if you ask me. Weird thing is, I don't actually hate her being emo and all. As a matter of fact, like the way I feel about most of this book, I don't feel any strong feelings for her... and hate is such a strong feeling.

And then, surprise, surprise! Suddenly, a mysterious but also drop dead gorgeous guy took an interest with our little miserable Kate, even though she had me convinced a few pages ago that she's nothing special. So I was left wondering what he sees in her? But then again, I didn't mind. I've read Twilight, and even like it, who am I to complain?

So, the mysterious but totally hot and gorgeous guy which goes by the name, Vincent, turned out to be not entirely human at all. Because, really, who likes a plain human to human love story, especially if it's a YA book? The love interest alway has to be some kind of a monster who's not really a monster, if you know what I mean. Great.

So here's the part of the book I can safely say that I like the most: the Revenants. They are humans who died saving other people and re-animated after 3 days to became immortals who's ultimate goal is to sacrifice themselves over and over again to save people's lives. For me, being a revenant gave Vincent all the right to be called a Hero. Most of YA heroes are not that heroic, you know. But Vincent is. Thank, God. And although the Revenants have a tendency to be stalkers, I didn't find them creepy because the explanation for that tendency is reasonable enough.

Here's the thing, Kate and Vincent are really such a cute couple. They are those kind of couples who, if you see them, you will think that they should stay together forever. I was kind of happy to read that they actually have dates and do normal stuffs to get to know each other. And the fact that they are in Paris adds a more romantic vibe in the story.

Eventually, Kate discovered what Vincent and his brethen, really are. And as expected from a girl who just barely moved on from the deaths of her parents, she freaked out. Now, we came to a point where I started to relate with Kate. I understand how she feels. She just lost her parents, and she's half in love with someone who is destined to die again and again. And even though, he will be reanimated after 3 days, who, in her right mind would like to be informed of her boyfriend's death, in a regular basis? So she tried to stay away from him. It was pathetic, really. But at least, she tried. It's the thought that counts.

But because this is a YA book and a love story, they got back together after Vincent offered a compromise. Sweet of him. And because everything is all rainbows and butterflies again, it is the perfect time for the bad guys to enter the scene. Say hello to our resident bad guys... The Numa. They are basically the opposite of revenants. They are people who betrayed other people to their deaths... The theory is the same as revenants, they animated after 3 days to become assholes for the rest of their immortal lives. Wait, that doesn't actually explained the nature of Numas, but you get the point.

Basically, the book is likable. The characters are likable. The writing is likable. Hell, there's really nothing to hate about this book. But it lacks that special something I'm looking for. It's like a boxer who has good punch but can't throw a killer punch.

But all in all, I guess I like it. I just don't love it.

I’ve definitely fallen in love with books set in Paris. It started with Anna and the French Kiss and moved on from there. There’s just something about this city that’s magical, so it makes sense that it’s a setting for a paranormal novel. There was very little lull in this one, and I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would. Kate was a very likeable character, and in the beginning I really fell in love with Vincent. To be honest, by the end, he was a little too obsessed with Kate. Not that she seemed to mind.

I really liked the idea of immortals. At first it made me think of Alyson Noel’s series, but I’m hoping this series turns out a lot better than Noel’s did. There’s not much about immortals in YA, and I enjoyed the spin Plum put on it. Vincent and his “family” are immortal, but that’s because when they died, they gave their lives for someone else. Now, somehow, this doesn’t work for everyone who gives their life for someone else, but their master or “father” or whatever he is has a keen sense for these immortals, and if he doesn’t wake them up then they truly die. But there are also bad immortals, those who kill people instead of saving them. And the two groups are literally immortal enemies

The romance was interesting. Cute, but a little too fast. I am satisfied though that “I love you” wasn’t said in the first book. I think that’s the only thing that really saved this romance for me. Kate and Vincent were moving really fast, and even though you could see the obvious connection between them, I could feel Vincent getting obsessive, especially when he was in his hibernation mode and couldn’t use his body. But besides that, I loved the cute moments between them and I can’t wait for more.

I’m happy I finally got to read this one. It’d been sitting on my shelf for a while, and when I saw I could read it during my Harper Imprint Challenge, I couldn’t wait. Now I can’t wait for the sequel! ...more
