I wasn’t surprised by how much I loved this book. If anything, I was waiting to be let down in some way. Not even close. This met my expectations and gave me so much more. Now I understand the hype. Not only that, but the main character is a book blogger!

I wasn’t surprised by how much I loved this book. If anything, I was waiting to be let down in some way. Not even close. This met my expectations and gave me so much more. Now I understand the hype. Not only that, but the main character is a book blogger!

Who writes books about aliens? Jennifer L. Armentrout does! But seriously, there aren’t that many out there in general, and even less in YA. I honestly can’t even think of one, and the only one that really comes to mind is Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. But instead of humans going to space, aliens have come here. And they live among us posing as humans.

The first meeting between Katy and Daemon (our out-of-this-world gorgeous love interest) doesn’t go so well. He’s shirtless, which can easily tongue-tie a girl when he’s tan and muscley. On top of that, he’s a total ass hat and makes Katy feel like a fool. I loved seeing his POV from their first meeting in the back of the book. Just priceless. Daemon obviously wants nothing to do with her. Or does he? He saves her life more than once (though it’s arguable that without him it wouldn’t have happened in the first place), and neither of them can deny their connection.

The small bits of alien information (especially about Daemon’s brother) and the relationships between the other aliens (and Katy and Daemon’s sister, whose name escapes me) really brought together the story. I loved how the aliens were all light, but can take on the shape of a human. As Katy said, Daemon picked his skin right. The guy on the cover looks delicious… but enough of that. Their relationship was the perfect one for me. I’ve been reading all these YA novels lately where they say I love you in the first book! That is unacceptable to me. Oppositely, Obsidian had a slowly growing romance that came to a boil and cooled down, then came to a boil and cooled down again. Now Katy is really the only one making it complicated. I can’t wait to see Daemon have to work to gain her affections. This is going to be good.

I am in love with this series already, and I get the feeling Onyx is going to be even better! Absolutely give this book a try. It’s cheaper to get it as an e-book, but I love my actual copy. I cannot wait for Onyx. I’ve literally read the teasers a zillion times! ...more

Katy has just moved to a podunk town in West Virginia to give her and her mother a new start after losing her dad. While she is not too happy about starting over somewhere new, she is pleased to find two new neighbors her age--one, a girl named Dee who quickly becomes a close friend, and her brother Daemon...who is scorching hot but extremely cocky and seems to insult Katy every time he opens his mouth.

As Katy gets closer to Dee and Daemon, she inevitably discovers that they are something not hu Katy has just moved to a podunk town in West Virginia to give her and her mother a new start after losing her dad. A lot of the time when reading hyped about books, I go into them thinking, "There's no way this could be as good as everyone is saying!" But I'm happy to day I LOVED Obsidian. I did have a couple of minor issues with it, but overall this book was a fantastic page turner.

I loved that Katy does not back down from Daemon or anyone else! Too often in YA the female main character fawns over her male counterpart and lusts after him for unknown reasons. Daemon and Katy spend the majority of the book truly disliking each other, and when they finally do come together it feels natural--and HOT!

This book had many parts that made me laugh and smile. Even though Daemon is a jerk, he is hilarious, and the banter between him and Katy was so fun to read. There were also parts that made me drop my jaw--and those of you who have read the book know I'm referring to the end of chapter 26--which left me all hot and bothered with nowhere to go!

The action was awesome and even though this book dealt with aliens, it didn't feel too sci-fi and out there. My one issue is that I wish I wouldn't have known Daemon and Dee were aliens before starting the book, because this fact is actually not revealed until about the halfway point, and it would have been more fun to discover it on my own.

I really can't wait for the next book in this series! The last few lines left me smiling and wanting more. ...more

This has been on my TBR for years. It was a good start to the series, and I’m planning to continue with it. There wasn’t a lot of backstory for Daemon and his sister, and I really hope the next one provides more information.

The narrator pronounces Daemon as “demon.” Had I been reading a printed copy, I would have read it as “DAY-mon.” Not sure which is correct.

I have a confession to make. I like mean boys. Not the kinds of boys who are cruel or kick puppies but boys who know how to drive a girl a little crazy. They’re good looking and they know it. Boys who love to tease and torment the heroine. The kinds of boys who you don’t know if you want to kick or kiss them. Yes, they might be considered jerks (and I really don’t recommend going out with jerks in real life) but often underneath their not-so-nice attitude is someone with redeeming qualities.

Now that I have that off my chest you’ll be able to see why I love Daemon from Obsidian. He’s the perfect bad boy--gorgeous, smart and arrogant; he knows just how to push a girl’s buttons. In this case, the girl is Katy, the new girl in town who is told to “make friends” by her mother. One encounter with Daemon has Katy looking for the next bus out of town. Unfortunately for her, moving to another state’s not an option.

But Katie’s no pushover and she gives just as good as she gets. Sure, she doesn’t win every argument with Daemon but she definitely has a mind of her own and isn’t afraid to call Daemon on his crap. I wanted to applaud during that scene in the cafeteria. Daemon, when he's not being a total ass, is funny and flirty and it's clear that he cares about his family a lot. And unlike a lot of girls in books with similar stories, Katy isn’t a victim. Yes, Daemon does save her a couple of times but Katy also does some rescuing of her own.

I loved the snarky banter between Katy and Daemon and the tension in their love/hate relationship. I also liked that this book is about aliens, with no vampires or werewolves in sight. Though not the most original story ever (new girl in town, broody boy) I still enjoyed every second of it. It all comes down to Daemon and Katy. They’re fantastic together and I want more - right now!

If you want a fun, fast read with a steamy romance and great dialogue, Obisidian is the book for you. I really cannot wait for the second book in the series, Onyx, to come out later this year.
