Really good history and description of information, information theory. It should be a good intro to the subject but if you are already familiar with the ideas of information entropy, thermodynamic entropy, maxwell's demon, turing machine, complexity etc..., you will appreciate the details in this book. Excellent book. Well written and the story pace is perfect. The only thing that I miss is a better description of the sources of many of the information provided. In this regard, a book like "Dark Hero of the Information Age: In search of Norbert Wiener, the father of Cybernetics" is much complet...

I think this should be required reading for computer science, physics, and biology students. It's a beautiful presentation of important ideas. Gleick does a great job introducing algorithmic information theory and the informational approach to the life sciences.
