I sat up until well after midnight last night to finish this book, as it really did leave me breathless. Of course, I was taken completely by the worlds and the seraphim and chimaera, but what was so brilliant was the slow revealing of the secret of Karou's existence, Akiva's behaviour and everything that had happened in the beginning of the book. I am pleased to say, I never even guessed at what was going on, but it was so logical and fantastic. And for once, I wasn't annoyed that the book was

It's been a long time since I last read a book that made me think of this word: epic.
I read a lot of fantasy and paranormal books, among others, and I read a lot about angels, devils, mythological creatures, other worlds in other dimensions, magic, and whatever else you can think of in the genre.
None of them has ever been as epic as this book.
There are no hobbits, wizards, dragons, vampires, fairies, or werewolves, in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though there are angels and many really interestin ...more

What an excellent story! I really enjoyed this one. I was totally entranced once I started because Karou's character was so interesting. I kind of knew what the big secret surrounding her true identity was but I didn't quite get it until right before the reveal and that was awesome because I kept coming up with different scenarios in my head. This was kind of sad too. So much killing and war in Karou's world and she didn't even realize it until close to the end of the book.

So incredibly good! Not much of a romance novel person, but when it is done like this I'm all in. The fantasy of this story is creative and beautiful, yet dark and mysterious. So engaging I couldn't put it down. This author is a genuine wordsmith with a brilliant way of describing this fascinating world.

The beginning of this book was slow going for me, but once I was about a quarter of the way in I was hooked.
When I realized what the story was about I didn't think I was going to like it, I don't really care for angel and demon stories, but I was very surprised to find that I did enjoy it!
The characters are interesting and unique. The ideas in the story are so different from anything else I've ever read, which was so refreshing.

I actually was going to give this book 3 stars but I decided I needed to sleep on it. There was so much I liked but my gut reaction was the book was meh. Once I had time to think about the book and character I thought it deserved a 4 star. I liked Karou and Akiva but I also liked Brimstone and Iggy and Twiga.
I have to say I think this is my first book about angels (maybe my second book, I think Crescent City had angels)
I liked it enough I need to read book 2 to see if (view spoiler) ...more

Taylor's writing style had me hooked within the first few pages of this one. It was witty, creative, and the analogies were a little brilliant and unique. I just loved Karou from the get-go. And the audiobook is the reason this is 5 stars. Bravo to that narrator, she was FAN-freaking-TATSIC! I can't wait to get my hands on the rest in this series!
