“People think it's just hellfire and brimstone, four horsemen and out, but actually the end times go on and on and on.”

A case of wrong expectations for a story. I thought I'd get a dystopian type read - the water is rising. And I'd get the struggle of sisters coming to terms with their terrible relationships and their father passing.

How can you mourn the loss of just one when the world is flooding?

I thought I would grapple with loss in the end of times. Instead I got more of a literary fiction

I am so glad that Lauren and The Books picked this for her Patreon book club because after really dislikingOur Wives Under the Sea I wasn't inclined to pick up another Julia Armfield.

Let me tell you my reading experience of these two books were like night and day. Even though the tone was similarly morose. The plot and the characters really drew me in to Private Rites. The supernatural/dystopian elements were sprinkled perfectly throughout the book culminating in an explosive ending that I didn
