What the fuck...
That's all I can think after finishing the book.

In the second novel by Marie Lu, Day and June are on the run from the Republic and are headed straight into the arms of the patriots. They quickly make a trade with the Patriots for their safety and information on Eden in exchange for their services. They are being hired to assassinate the Elector Primo, the recently promoted Anden. Mostly this task falls heavily on June. She is thrust back into the Republic she just abandoned and i What the fuck...

They are being hired to assassinate the Elector Primo, the recently promoted Anden. Mostly this task falls heavily on June. She is thrust back into the Republic she just abandoned and is forced to quickly strike ties with the new Elector in order to turn on him later. At first it sounds okay, kill the leader of the Republic which has been ordering murders and using the plague against its own civilians, but soon June realizes that Anden is not his father. He wants change in the Republic, but will June give him the opportunity to try and if she does what will that mean for Day and their ties to the Patriots.

Basically, I don't know if I have read a sequel that I enjoyed just as much as the first book, but I definitely feel this way after Prodigy. Usually, the second book of a trilogy falls short, but this one definitely delivered. I was left shocked on multiple occasions and I am still shocked and heartbroken with this ending. Mostly, I feel like Marie Lu did an incredible job of exploring her characters. I like that June and Day's relationship is shaky. I have never bought into the completely blind faithful love at first sight love that most YAL tries to portray. June and Day feel real not because I question their feelings for each other, but because they question it. In reality they have only known each other for a few weeks, so the doubts are completely reasonable. However, I like that even with the doubts they push through on faith. I also found myself much more drawn to June in this book, where as in Legend I was more drawn to Day. Needless to say I am desperately waiting for the last book of the trilogy and I cannot wait to see where it will take June, Day, and the Republic. ...more
