The Desert Challenge is an excellent book for year 2-3 pupils. The book follows a young girl on football camp who hates creepy crawlies. After being given a mysterious compass and falling in the sand, Sophie finds herself on an a desert adventure. This book teaches many survival skills of the desert and highlights desert characteristics as well as the fact Sophie learns to overcome her fears thanks to Bear. This series of books would be great to tie in with classes learning about different biomes. The book includes several illustrations throughout and is organised in short chapters. The book is a simple read with large text for children who are moving onto longer books for the first time. A great theme of survival skills with lots of opportunities for learning more about the desert in a fiction style.
