Bray creates an eerie,richly atmospheric world. The twenties come to life as a powerful, supernatural danger is lurking. She draws upon the actual fascination with the occult during this period to create her world. Some reviewers have felt that Evie, the main character, is too shallow, vain and a stereotypical flapper.
