My daughter has been bugging me to read this series for a while now, probably to get me back for bugging her to read Pierce's Circle series. I figured I'd enjoy it, and I did. Actually, I liked it more than I thought I would, considering I wasn't super psyched about the whole girl-disguised-as-a-boy-so-she-can-become-a-warrior thing. It actually put me in mind of The Ranger's Apprentice series - The Ruins of Gorlan, which was also awesome!

This is a perfectly good introduction to fantasy. And had I been 12 or younger when I read it, I would have probably loved it. It just didn't feel all that interesting or new to me when I read it now. I would definitely recommend it to young readers, however, as I think they would really enjoy it. And I'm hoping to find a Tamora Pierce book that I enjoy more--so many of the teens at the library just fall in love with her books and read all of them. I'm going to keep trying them out.
