Yes, ostensibly, this book is about a baseball player. Not being a big baseball fan myself, I wasn't sure if I'd like the book. However, the book is about so much more: a young adult learning to deal with success, self-doubt, and failures. Baseball is just the plot device that Harbach uses to tell the story.
