I was not expecting to enjoy this book anywhere near as much as I did. I'd heard so much about it I felt sure that it wouldn't live up to its expectations. I'd also heard that it focussed on God and religion and books concerning religion can often become too preachy and off-putting.

I know there's quite a lot of symbolism and a deeper meaning to this story than simply that of a shipwrecked boy. Some of the symbolism eludes me while some is very clear. It is an interesting story that comes together at the very end. The beginning of the book is hard to get into but once past about the first 1/4 the story takes over. While it certainly isn't my favorite book I'm glad I read it.
