Well, I finally reached the point where I wanted to finish it and know what happened. So I did finish it but not sure if I know what happened. I have a friend who tells me I like a plot-driven novel. I do. She does not mean it as a compliment. I still do. If I could distill the story, minus the gore, it would have been an enjoyable read. Bits of it I really liked, but not enough of them for me to read this on my own, without being a club read. I did like the characters, even Richard Parker.

This novel is a piece of work. It was hard to get through some sections as I felt a little bored at times and wondering where the author was trying to go with the subject matter. I don't want to give anything away, but if you can make it through the entire book you will understand the greatness of this novel. One of my favorite pieces of fiction within it's own fiction. Just finished "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. I had a hard time following the story at the beginning, but by the second disk I was hooked. Great story and great descriptive writing, though almost too descriptive in places. Overall I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. ...more

I picked this up at the airport in, oh, 2005? as it seemed to be something different from my usual reads, and I absolutely loved it. It was strange and interesting and I couldn't put it down. (Thankfully I was on a long flight to somewhere... I can remember the book, not the place I went. Isn't that interesting.)
