This book showcases the generational African American experience. Yaa Gyasi really brings home the theme that the social constructs that exist today are all based on decisions of the past. She touches upon civil rights through every imaginable way possible: slavery, segregation, incarceration, religion, etc. The only piece of advice for anyone wanting to read this book is don’t read it far apart because you’ll lose track of the characters quickly.
