Beautiful prose and the narration by Ruby Dee was a huge part of my enjoyment of this vivid timeless story. The voice of the main character reveals deeply complex yet universal stories of hope and despair, oppression and danger and just plain living, life with pain and joy intermixed. We take up with Janie not so long after the Civil War initially as a young girl of sixteen; and through the journey we take with her, along the hard dusty roads of South Florida, the story takes us very far indeed, ...more
