Wild Swans is the book I didn't even know I needed about the evolution of modern China. It's evocative and renders an undoubtedly complex country at a confusing time in history very clear--as clear as it possibly can be. I've never read another text, fiction or non-, about China that illustrates the many twists, reversals, and contradictions in policy that made Mao's China such a fraught and confusing place to live. ...more
