About the last thing I expected from this detective novel was a poetry-spouting Chief Inspector.
Chen not only recites classical Chinese poetry but is himself a published poet – as well as a translator of western poems and even mysteries. And he is a bit of a gourmet as well.

Inspector Chen is a good cop and a good poet. He is thrust into the case of his career when a National Model Worker is murdered. This is a good police procedural with great insight into Chinese culture and its political machinations. He and his coworker, Yu, are very interesting characters and their frustrations at the investgation's turns are at some times, palpable. The ending, though not as satisfying for them, satisfied me completely.
