One of the most chilling characters in literature I have ever encountered. Tom Ripley is all the more horrifying because of his total lack of empathy; someone who has looked into the abyss and thinks nothing of pushing others into it while laughing. I can only imagine what sort of impact a book like this might have had in 1955, when it first came out. Highsmith overtops big Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me, if not in savagery, then in the repressed sexuality of her main character, and especially in the fact that (view spoiler) .
