Once again, Dumas' writing really just flows in a gripping, "can't put it down," way. It might have been 700 pages long, but there were nights where I read 100 or so pages and it felt like I had read only 20. I can't imagine having to wait in between chapters when it was published in a serialized fashion.

Read this aloud to the kids as we prepared for France, but as it took exactly forever, we didn’t finish till well after our trip. It’s a fun romp with funny bits galore, but we all agreed that none of the characters are particularly people we would like to know in real life, and there is a lot of misogyny. We were glad to finally finish.

I like Alexander Dumas’ writing. While he is one of the 19th century novelists that was paid by the word and therefore drags his stories on for too long, at least he keeps it action packed and enjoyable.

His characters are always vividly portrayed and none more so than Milady. Milady is the perfect villain. She’s intelligent, vengeful, plotting, self-advancing, seductive and so on. There were points where I sided more with her than with our Musketeers.
