Another 'classic bucket list' book. As he buys dead souls in an attempt to help increase his social standing Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov represents the all too common association that is made between power, ethics and the law. The dead on the list are treated (by the law) better than they ever were when they were living. Should be required reading to get an MBA. ...more

I had no idea this was going to be so funny. I found myself either grinning or actually laughing out loud in various places. Not just the entire concept of buying dead serfs.... the idividuals that Chichikov comes across are so unique and quirky that they had me laughing. I loved the way each of them was portrayed. Not unlike Dickens in his way of giving characters some major flaw then making it funny. In this case it was usually greed, suspicion, or paranoia. My favorite of these quirksters? Pr ...more

Chichikov, an unscrupulous character, travels around Russia buying dead serfs (dead souls) from landowners. He discovered that wealth was measured by the number of serfs a landowner had. At that time, a landowner was taxed on the number of serfs he had. Periodically, a census was taken to count serfs. After a census, some of the serfs died but the landowners continued to be taxed on these dead souls until the next census.
