The classic (and I believe first) 'a secret society is after me and no one will believe me' story line - reminded me of a kind of proto-James Bond novel. You are really invested in the situation; if things continue on the way they are going there will be a war...a war that will 'ripple' out and cover the world. Tense and impactful!

I enjoyed reading this book. The author's descriptions are great and one can feel the tension wax and wane as our character goes through his many escapades. Thankfully, this is a short book, because I couldn't put it down until the very end - so I read it in one sitting. The ending with the character's doubts about the others keeps the reader in suspense until he sees the others morph into the evil beings that he knows them to be.

This is the original spy novel that started them all - and it really gives you all the elements: A murder mystery, a suspenseful chase, an airplane, a train, disguised mansion, a yacht.... Really the only thing missing is the scantily clad women.
It’s not exactly my pick of genres/stories it’s definitely a “mans-man” type of book. However I’m really not mad at it. It’s such a quick read - short & fast paced and re ...more
