Manna Francis is a genius. An evil genius.

The whole story here is a giant rush, it gets your adrenaline going and your pulse up like mad and at the end you feel, again, thoroughly and utterly mind-fucked. This is what this is, a slow, deliberate, precise, and incredibly effective mindfuck. Holy shit.

This series has been an interesting read for me. I know there are 2 more short installments, but I wanted to review this book as it's own entity.

It was super slow to start (after the initial few action-packed pages). I was bored through a lot of the first half, and kept just wishing for more Warrick, who is hands down my favorite character in this s Warning - I hid this review due to spoilers for a reason! It was super slow to start (after the initial few action-packed pages). I was bored through a lot of the first half, and kept just wishing for more Warrick, who is hands down my favorite character in this series. The political maneuvering between Toreth and Carnac got old really quickly. But I started getting really into this novel around the time Bev helped Toreth arrange a 30 minute escape to go tell Warrick Carnac's plan regarding Kate's arrest.

From there, it got intense and VERY interesting very quickly.

I wanted to shake sense into Toreth for most of the last third of it, but that's nothing new. Frankly, I don't love Toreth - I just think he's a sociopath. Granted, a sociopath with an endearing, and sometimes even amusing inability to articulate the very clear and deep love he feels for Warrick, but a sociopath nonetheless. Anytime he would express feeling anger intense enough to want to kill Warrick out of jealousy, I've been like... Yeah, dude is fucking crazy, beyond what a messed up parental relationship would likely cause on its own.

Weirdly though? I was still rooting for Warrick to find him and for them to make up, which thankfully did happen. And it was a damned good make up, too. So bravo, Manna Francis: I do actually like the sociopath being with the masochist.

Does anyone else (besides my girl deirdre!) think that the names Kate and Leo were a very intentional coincidence?!

And speaking of... the ending shocked the shit out of me. I was NOT expecting that. I usually pride myself on being really good with picking out context clues from foreshadowing, but that just completely took me by surprise. Maybe because there really wasn't foreshadowing for THAT. O_o

Overall, an interesting read. This series has taken me awhile to get through because I found a lot of it slow, and frankly rather dull at times, but this book had a very well-developed story arc, and though it took me awhile to feel really engaged in the plot, once I got there I was really *there.*

What a tremendously amazing ride that was. Firstly, thank you AGAIN Manna. This book somehow was better than the last one which I probably reviewed as the BEST book so far in the series...(ha!)
