There was potential at first but this didn't deliver for me. The world wasn't that compelling or original, the torture wasn't visceral or exciting or hell, even on screen, the plot was dull and dragged, and I felt nothing for the characters. It wasn't awful. I know that's not a glowing recommendation, but it's the best I can say.
My biggest issue is the lack of heat between the characters. The sex scenes were fine, but there was no real connection between Warrick and Toreth. No affection or compa ...more

What can I say? I feel totally mind-fucked.
I started reading with certain expectations which got repeatedly blown away. Most of Toreth's actions showed a human side, which I expected would be much more difficult to find. He seemed far more vulnerable and less in control than Warrick. Unexpected and threw me for a while.

It wasn't quite what I expected from a dystopian, and not even what I was looking for, but there's no way I can't say that it wasn't excellent. The writing blew me away, the plots and twists were exciting, and the characters...
Toreth is wonderfully flawed. I mean, seriously flawed. It made me smile and laugh many times to see how reckless about other people he is, how easily he manipulates, and how easily he dismisses them. I also liked how Warrick became somewhat of an exception and how Warrick ...more

I'd actually rate this more like 3.5. I didn't love it enough for 4, but it was better than 3.
The positives: the writing is very solid. The tone sort of reminded me of ICoS. I really seem to like these alternate future, military/spy/government novels. Who knew?! LOL
The negatives: it got waaaaay bogged down with technical details, and I found myself bored through large chunks of the middle part. I'm not particularly attached to any of the characters, either.

I am speechless.. I really am.
This book was truly amazing in every single detail, in every single aspect. I really have nothing to criticse. Nothing--Nada.
The characters are intriguing, astonishing, manipulative, sexy.
Toreth is, by all means, not a good person. He is a cruel, socio- and psychopath. That alone should tell you that he doesn't normally give a fuck about anyone but himself [let Sara, his admin, be the exception of the rule]. He plays games with other people, likes to torture them, n ...more

This is so my type of read. There is a mystery, a dystopian society, and two fucked up characters trying to fuck each other up while fucking each other. It is dark and twisted and seriously put a smile on my face.
The mystery is slow to develop, and had me thinking I figured it out because of a naughty sneak peak into the bad guy/girl... but I should have known that nothing would be that simple. There are complex shades of grey, corruption, terrorists, and an in-depth look into Tore ...more

★★★★☆½ ~ 4.5 Stars
Interesting, detailed world-building. Very cat and mouse and both of our heroes have questionable ethics. There was too much suspense and mystery and not enough sexing for me (felt more like fade-to-black) but I persevered and I did end up liking it although I ended up skimming to get through it and move on. I was encouraged to finish it and read Pancakes which I did and really liked but I don't know that I'll continue with the series since I have so many more smutty books to r ...more

Had potential...didn't develop the plot....I mean the character and the environment and setting was well done but the plot was just plain and boring...actually no plot at all....just a string on events leading to more and more and more sex.... -_-
