On the one hand, I really enjoyed this. The writing style feels wonderfully folktale-ish; I love the "pomegranate, pomegranate, pomegranate" refrain and the rhyme scheme is generally good -- it just begs to be read around a campfire. The illustrations were not my favorite, yet somehow grabbed me. This is one of those books that tugged at my heartstrings. I am, however, a little confused as to the "moral of the story." Lovely language delivered with engaging cadence and fun wordplay. The illustrations have both an eerie and nostalgic feeling; the gang of kids are wonderfully drawn.

TEACHERS: great for teaching wordplay. And for discussions of false impressions, "judging a book by it's cover", local rumors/legends.
