This incredibly thought provoking book is the unfortunate true story of the choices of a nation that allowed a domineering, brainwashing government control the minds of their children. Ms. Bartoletti has compiled the stories of the children who willingly and eagerly joined the various divisions of the Hitler Youth; these children were so devoted to Germany and Hitler that they even turned their own parents in to the police, if they spoke against Hitler or his programs. The first-hand accounts of

It’s unimaginable for people today to understand how one man can rally enough support to generate the mass killing of an entire people; Hitler Youth is the story of Germany’s Aryan race and their lives during World War II. Throughout the book we follow the lives of young Hitler youth and see the brainwashing, the fear, the hope, and the patriotism that energized and worried a discouraged nation. This book is mesmerizing because it tells the well-known story from an unheard of perspective, the Ge

Hitler Youth by Bartoletti

The book covers the stories of the youth affected by the regime of Hitler’s elimination of the impure race that is now known as the Holocaust, and the lives of the youth effected were across the spectrum of commitment and truth. The youth were lied to, brainwashed, used for their spirit and strength, yet as a pre-service teacher I find the saying “the youth are our future” more important due to the influence we have over students by what we teach them. What an interesting book to offer a different perspective about the young men and women who lived in Germany during Hitler’s time of power! It was amazing to read the stories of the young people who loved coming together for the greater good of Germany, but then began to resist authority once they realized they had lost the right to have their own opinions and unique personalities. This book illustrates how important it is for young people to feel like they are making a difference in the world.

Susan Bartoletti authors a fascinating non fiction account of youth in Nazi Germany. The novel interrupts a crowded perception of the Holocaust victims wrongfully persecuted for "not being" and introduces the idea that German youth were enslaved "to be." As a future educator, it put into perspective the power of influence I inherit just by standing in front of a classroom of children. "Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow" is a great resource to incorporate in middle school classes to sho

The novel Hitler Youth by Susan Bartoletti is a historical account of various children's perspectives living in Germany during the Hitler regime. Paired with Elie Wiesel's Night, this would be a good contrasting perspective for students to read and make their own judgements about World War II. From a teaching point of view, middle graders would benefit greatly from learning the importance of individual freedoms and the true meaning of acting courageously. Reading this book left me empathizing wi
