Like all good suspense stories, When The Heat’s Off isn’t all it appears to be after reading the first few pages. The fears of an old woman living alone soon develop into a heated situation, which cranks up to a satisfying twist and conclusion. It’s tight, tense and the characters are well-drawn. Excellent dialogue too; the three characters have distinct, natural voices. Probably should say the cat does too, given she adds a peripheral, feline perspective to the unfolding events.

Outstandingly well written short story with very impressive characterization, tension and plot. Ella, Frank and Vic are all tangible people who, while remaining true to themselves through the crisis, stretch and change in response to events and one another. Sophie the cat has her own little voice, as does Ella's house, her home of many years. Ginger Bensman allows herself the liberty of some expressive poesy within her prose, but this is always within the flow and the demands of the story. Stead ...more
