I read Binti through The Year's Best Science-Fiction and Fantasy Novellas - 2016 Edition, edited by Paula Guran, which was provided to me by NetGalley.
As for Binti, it has good and fresh ideas, like the concept of Harmonizers, a galactic school, the astrolabe and even the cultural differences portrayed. The shrimp ship.
But it also had glaring problems with some events, as if the author simply forgot she had written them and the amount of convenience was just too much for my taste.

This wasn't a long read, in fact, I read it all in one seating, but despite it's size, this book touched me a lot. The main character, Binti, is brave, resourceful and compassionate in a very grounded way and the development of both Binti's culture and the Meduse were very interesting.
Though it could've probably benefited from being longer, so that the development could breathe a little more, all in all, I thought this was quite delightful. ...more
