What Members Thought
For me, this was an annoying read till after the halfway point when the main character finally grew a spine. Before that, I was getting frustrated with her being a doormat, the story being predictable, and the constant Googling. But once she started growing up, and the characters started having more nuances than being a terrible mother or a terrible brother, etc., it got better for me. I liked the book by the end, but I don't know if that made up for the first half of the book.

A coming-of-age story with rich details of Maddie, a 2nd generation immigrant from Ghana to London. I had a difficult time with her in the beginning - she was such a doormat. But I was happy to see her grow as the novel went along. Her mother was much harder to take - such a piece of work!
The narration by Heather Agyepong was exceptional.

Wow! So much heart and feeling through her writing. Maddie is wonderfully human and imperfect. And her relationship with her dad, brother and mother felt deep, layered and complicated. Loved George's writing.
