This book did surprise me in some ways and was predictable in others. While the mystery of Travis and Maggie is predictable as the story goes along, there's more to the story. Overarching themes of choice, power, and community make this a page-turner. Ernshaw sprinkles in clues steadily throughout the story, involving the missing characters and the darkness lurking outside the isolated village of Pastoral. ...more

This was a really interesting read. At first it follows Travis Wren who is on the hunt for Maggie St. James, an author who suddenly disappeared 5 years ago. However, Travis possesses certain abilities, he's able to see past memories when touching other peoples things. When Travis gets a clue that Maggie might be in a town called Pastoral, he goes searching for her.

I'd like to preface this by saying that I am someone that absolutely appreciates an easily consumable formulaic mystery/thriller, so my review should in no way be see as shaming them. And in fact, I was expecting precisely that when I picked this up having never read Ernshaw before.

I think this had the potential to be better than it was. The author is good at building suspense and a sense of fear. However, the way things were resolved left me feeling underwhelmed. I liked it enough though.
