I'm not sure what struck me about this one, but the first half was slow. It was stuttery for me and I struggled to stay focused or be pulled in to the story. But about half way, I became fully invested. I wondered what was really going on and tried to unravel the mysteries. I ended up really enjoying and liking this one. This was not what I expected, but ended up being very pleasantly surprised! I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about the magical realism genre (not a fan usually), but that ended up being pretty minor and worked really well.

Creepy and riveting with a fairy-tale/isolated rural town trope (similar to "The Village") but with more to it. Children's book author Maggie St. James has been missing for 5 years and Travis Wren, who has a talent for locating missing persons, has been tasked to find her. This leads him to the remote village of Pastoral and then things get weird. I predicted the big twists but did not anticipate the small ones and I was riveted to the last page. I think this had the potential to be better than it was. The author is good at building suspense and a sense of fear. However, the way things were resolved left me feeling underwhelmed. I liked it enough though.
